Curatorial analysis
A vertical, golden luminosity cuts through a dense mass of penumbra and scorched earth tones. Across an imposing format of one hundred and sixty centimeters in height, which engages directly with the viewer's scale, the surface is governed not by descriptive drawing of foliage, but by the physical pressure of the oil itself. The paint unfolds through dragging, tensions, and tactile peels that evoke the fractal veins of tree bark, plant fibers, and the compacted dampness of the jungle floor.
Powerful vertical axes structure the canvas into ascending columns that emulate crowded trunks, while in the center, a fissure of olive greens, amber ochres, and sulfurous yellows suggests an interior clearing. Spatial construction deliberately dispenses with Renaissance perspective to sustain itself on the clash between opacity and filtered light. Toward the lateral edges and the lower base, deep browns and asphalt tones behave in an absorbing, heavy manner; in contrast, the luminous core seems to emanate an internal radiance, as if the thicket sheltered a fossil glow struggling to surface through the shadows.
The material treatment reveals mechanical pressures, scraping, and tearing across the wet oil film, baring microscopic ridges, striations, and deposits that fragment raking light with mineral intensity. This corrugated texture denies the illusion of a comfortable horizon and demands physical proximity: the eye does not contemplate a distant landscape, but rather a dense, tactile skin acting as an impenetrable protective wall.
Rather than a representation of nature, the canvas summons the domain of a primordial sanctuary. Darkness here is not absence or emptiness, but an ongoing condition of gestation, a telluric stratum where bark, heavy air, and sap blend into a single biological pulse. The piece places the viewer at a threshold where the forest ceases to be an external motif and becomes an encompassing space, ruled by geological time that resists any domesticating gaze.
