Curatorial analysis

A striated, geological texture completely dominates the surface, transforming the oil paint into a living organism where matter seems to have emerged through pressure, suction, and capillarity. Through a treatment akin to decalcomania, the pigment unfolds into thousands of vertical ridges, tiny venations, and folds that construct an enveloping cavity. This is not a documentary botanical transcription, but rather a plastic immersion into the density of the rainforest, where minerals, flora, and liquid shadows merge into a single tactile substance.

The compositional tensions are articulated through an unrelenting vertical rhythm that evokes stalagmites and ancient trunks as much as dense curtains of hanging lianas. Toward the lateral edges and the lower plane, deep olive tones, browns, and smoky blacks erect a cavernous architecture that compresses the space and retains the gaze. However, within the middle-left core, an incandescent fissure of golden ochres and amber glows opens up. This unexpected warmth shatters the opacity of the canopy, hinting at sunlight struggling to pierce through the treetops or a telluric warmth rising from the wet earth.

The monumental format of one and a half meters per side forecloses any visual escape. By eliminating the horizon line and voiding classical vanishing points, the viewer is placed squarely inside the tangle, surrounded by a ceaseless optical vibration produced by the meticulous grooving of the paint. There is no clearly delineated sky or ground; the space operates as a continuous atmosphere of humidity and mystery. The Braulio Carrillo thus reveals itself not as an idyllic postcard of the forest, but as a primeval sanctuary, an enclosed ecosystem that devours distance and asserts its own untamed condition.
