Curatorial analysis

A dense, mineral verticality defines the initial encounter with this large, five-foot square canvas. The oil paint unfolds not as a mimetic representation of the plant world, but as a living substance scraped, dragged, and smeared across the surface, condensing the atmosphere of the humid tropics without the need to delineate a single recognizable leaf. A botanical and geological force inhabits the surface, where earth pigments and moss greens seem to have germinated or settled under continuous tension.

The structure is organized along a rigorous vertical rhythm evocative of tree trunks, vines, and ancient bark. Toward the upper third, a diagonal streak of ochre and amber light fractures that severity, cutting through like a sunbeam penetrating a virgin canopy. This luminous fissure forms a sharp contrast with the lower zones, submerged in deep browns, damp shadows, and organic blacks. Rather than relying on conventional linear perspective, depth here is tactile, achieved through superimposed layers: scrapings that expose earlier strata, textured imprints recalling moss or fossilized bark, and oily glazes preserving the sheen of twilight.

The monumental scale engulfs the viewer, placing one inside an impenetrable thicket. This physical confrontation elicits a dual sensation of wonder and claustrophobia. The forest ceases to be a contemplative landscape and becomes an autonomous organism, where light does not illuminate from without, but seems to filter through a thick, mysterious body. The painting ultimately functions as a cross-section of the Costa Rican jungle itself, capturing not its outward contour, but its dark pulse, its respiration, and its primordial humidity.
