Curatorial analysis

A thermal whirlwind emerges from absolute darkness to dominate this diptych. Rather than depicting figurative flames, Emilia Cersósimo unleashes a rotational force where pigment acts as combusting matter. The two canvases engage in dialogue through a shared centrifugal movement that seems to expand beyond the physical limits of the stretcher: the left panel concentrates the igneous core within a tight, dense, almost volcanic spiral, while the right panel gathers that same expansive wave and disperses it into a thermal tide rising and dissolving into shadow.

The surface thrives on the persistent trace of the brush bristles. The sweeping motion does not conceal the impasto; on the contrary, it combs the oil into delicate grooves that evoke the friction of rushing air or the flow of an internal eruption. Set against a deep, velvety black ground, the carmines, vermilions, and incandescent ochre flashes are not statically laid down, but wrested from the dark with contained violence. Certain areas turn intensely incandescent through brief scrapings or lighter glazes that simulate glowing embers on the verge of erupting, producing a constant oscillation between opacity and transparency.

This tension between the black abyss and ignition evokes both a cosmic genesis and the behavior of primordial energy before assuming identifiable form. By fracturing the space across two adjacent frames, the gaze is caught in the interval, compelled to reconstruct the continuity of a fiery gale that defies stasis. The painting is thus experienced as pure temperature and impulse, a visual record of the exact instant light tears through the primal void.
