Artist Biography

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1956, Guillermo Conte is a contemporary artist whose work bridges the realms of abstraction and figuration, exploring the boundaries between perception, gesture, and emotion. Conte began his artistic education at the School of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires, where he developed a profound sensitivity to visual expression from a young age.

At 19, he left Argentina, embarking on a journey through Latin America and Europe that would shape his international perspective. He lived and worked in Barcelona, Madrid, and Milan, before settling in Rome in 1977. There, he joined the “Na Sc la Romana” movement and collaborated with Galería Fabio Argentina, establishing himself in the European art scene.

Returning to the Americas in the early 1980s, Conte divided his time between Buenos Aires and New York, immersing himself in the vibrant “underground” art scene of his hometown. During this period, he co-founded the influential artistic trio LOCSON with Rafael Bueno and Majo Okner. The group organized multiple exhibitions and events, including presentations at Fundación Proa, contributing to a pivotal moment in Argentine contemporary art. These years of experimentation, risk, and exploration left a lasting imprint on his artistic vision.

In the 1990s, Conte relocated permanently to Costa Rica with gallerist Jacobo Karpio. From his new base, he continued to engage with the international art world, participating in prestigious fairs such as Art Basel, FIAC Paris, MACO Mexico, and Artera Buenos Aires. He has collaborated with respected galleries across Latin America, including Thomas Cohn (Brazil), Alfredo Ginocchio (Mexico), Enlace (Peru), and Vassari (Argentina), as well as Galería Valanti and Artflow in Costa Rica.

Conte’s work is defined by its oscillation between the concrete and the abstract, the perceptible and the enigmatic. His paintings and mixed-media works often employ techniques of automatic writing, spontaneous gesture, and nearly monochromatic palettes inspired by Impressionist principles. These strategies allow him to explore the interplay between emotion, memory, and movement, resulting in works that are at once intimate and universal.

His artistic practice is rooted in action and transformation. Conte’s canvases are accumulations of gestures, traces, and marks that evoke the fluidity of human experience. Through his exploration of space, texture, and color, he challenges the viewer to engage with the ambiguity and immediacy of perception. Over decades, this dedication to experimentation has solidified his place in Latin American contemporary art, with works featured in international auctions, including Sotheby’s and Christie’s.

Conte’s ongoing project is one of dialogue: between abstraction and figuration, between tradition and innovation, and between the artist and the wider cultural landscape. His works reflect a deep engagement with the history and present of Latin American visual culture while remaining profoundly personal and expressive.
