Curatorial analysis

The sheer weight of the tram breaks in from the left flank with an almost sculptural solidity, cutting through a milky, faded atmosphere. Rather than conforming to a documentary record of urban transit, the scene establishes itself in a territory suspended between testimony and memory, where the machine retains its density of metal and shadow while the surrounding city dissolves into greenish hazes and ash grays. The framework of the car, constructed through dark lines and resolute blocks of black, grounds the visual weight of the frame and immediately confronts the viewer before yielding to the indeterminacy of the background.

A bare, vertical post acts as a dividing axis that organizes the depth of the plane. Around it wander two human silhouettes reduced to their essential contours: a passerby seen from behind, who seems to walk toward the foreground wrapped in a band of light, and another farther off, standing with arms akimbo like an impassive witness. This economy of figures generates an intense cinematic gravity. The trolley poles shoot upward in dry, diagonal strokes toward the upper edge, reinforcing a sense of accumulated energy against the phantasmal stillness of the setting.

The screenprint deliberately avoids the flat, uniform finish typical of the industrial medium. Conte builds the surface through transparencies, ink drags, and washes that echo the spontaneity of gouache or monotype, allowing a grayish-ochre ground reminiscent of aged paper to breathe through. On the ground, a diagonal sweep of broken white casts a spectral glare that destabilizes the ground plane and throws shadows forward. In that continuous friction between the tram's severe architecture and the evaporation of the landscape, the work captures the mystery of an era suspended in the moment just before its disappearance.
