Curatorial analysis

The horizon, set in the upper third beneath an overcast sky of milky greys, compresses the space and drives the viewer's gaze down into the churn of the water. A series of dark bands, modeled in dense, viscous oil, interrupts the aquatic plain like reefs emerging and submerging with the tide. This is not an idyllic tropical postcard, but a rugged coastline where salinity and sea mist can be felt in the vibration of muted tones.

This architecture of horizontal bands sustains the rhythm of the canvas. The paint matter works at two opposing speeds: on one hand, fluid washes that drip downward, leaving the framework of the support visible; on the other, impasto crests of white and ochre that catch the raking light with the force of an offshore swell. The wet rocks, executed in near-bituminous blacks and dark browns, provide the tectonic weight necessary to keep the scene from dissolving into vapor and foam.

In the lower band, where wet sand captures the sky's lingering reflections, a brisk, enigmatic black script emerges, resembling an illegible text or a handwritten note jotted down in haste before the tide comes in. This gesture shifts the painting toward the realm of a travel journal: the coast ceases to be a mere physical environment and becomes a surface of inscription, a transitory record where personal memory and the relentless erosion of the marine landscape merge.
