Curatorial analysis

A liquid, phosphorescent atmosphere dominates the surface of this monumental diptych, where lime green, chartreuse, and olive tones function not as a mere backdrop, but as an enveloping element. The paint unfolds through translucent glazes and vertical drippings that cascade with the cadence of a steady rain or the dense rhythm of a bamboo grove, blurring the boundary between forest landscape and pure luminous abstraction.

The physical division of the two panels establishes a silent tension. On the left, a denser, knottier trunk ascends with firm ribbing, articulated through touches of dark green and off-white that model its volume against the reigning transparency. On the right, a more open tree spreads its branches like a fan toward the margins and into the empty center, seeking a dialogue with its counterpart without ever touching. Between the two trees, the pictorial matter seems to hover: faint stains of warm ochre and gold stipple the middle ground like leaves suspended in an updraft or sunbeams caught in the mist.

Guillermo Conte resolves the canvas through a calculated coexistence of control and accident. The calibrated draftsmanship of the branches, with their botanical fractures and calligraphic line, contrasts with the unrestrained freedom of the acrylic runs coursing down the canvas. This unrelenting verticality evokes both the pull of gravity on water and the upright structure suggested by the title, while the defoliated trees introduce a spectral, almost wintry quality.

The ensemble thus proposes an immersion into a dissolving nature. Rather than documenting a specific forest, the canvas builds a meditative space where filtered light, constant dripping, and the fragility of the branches articulate a suspended moment, in which vegetal life becomes memory, silence, and chromatic vibration.
