Curatorial analysis

A wall of foliage advances into the foreground on a monumental scale that transforms the botanical motif into an almost immersive experience. In this large-format diptych, fleshy croton leaves saturate the surface, virtually dissolving any sense of horizon or landscape vanishing point. The painting deliberately dispenses with atmospheric haze to concentrate on organic architecture, layering foliar shapes like strata in a living bas-relief.

Color contrast governs how the image is read. Set against dense, dark shadows that barely emerge from the crevices, expanses of cadmium yellow and meticulously modulated greens burst forth with luminous precision. This interplay between deep background darkness and frontal brightness lends each leaf a sculptural volume, underscored by the precise rendering of the veins. Above this enveloping vegetal mass, heliconia inflorescences emerge, their sharp red profiles providing an angular, dynamic counterpoint. They flare across the assembly like controlled sparks, interrupting the curvilinear cadence of the crotons with taut, ascending vectors.

The physical division into two panels reinforces the sense of verticality and hints at an infinite continuum, as if the frame captured only an excerpt of a condensed, suspended jungle. The medium sits smoothly on the surface, almost enameled, favoring crisp outlines and chromatic resonance over heavy impasto. This technical precision imbues the flora with a tactile presence, freeing it from stereotypical tropical decorativism and turning it into something totemic. Broennimann avoids merely documenting a garden, crafting instead an atmosphere of rigorous, contained lushness where foliage becomes pure, vital geometry.
