Curatorial analysis

The tight framing and narrow format of ninety by thirty centimeters immediately establish a physical relationship with the flower: the dahlia ceases to be a distant, contemplative motif and becomes an engulfing mass that deliberately overflows the canvas boundaries. By removing the stem, air, and horizon, the gaze is compelled to traverse the undulations of the petals as though they were geological folds or fragments of a living body.

Red operates here not as a flat hue, but as matter modulated across multiple intensities. Ana Broennimann constructs volume through chromatic transitions ranging from vibrant vermilion on illuminated ridges to dense, near-garnet shadows within interior recesses. Each layer overlaps the next in a cascading rhythm, alternating wide, calm expanses with tight, taut folds in the upper section. This curved cadence lends the composition an unmistakable tactile quality, reinforced by a subtle texture vibrating beneath the pigment.

Amid this absolute monochromatic dominance, a solitary dark wedge breaks through at the lower right corner. This dense, deep vegetal triangle functions as an indispensable compositional anchor: its tonal weight grounds the vertigo of the red, establishing a coordinate of gravity that restores the flower's organic origin. Without that deep shadow, the space would collapse into pure flat abstraction.

Such a microscopic approach strips the floral subject of any decorative complacency. The scale and painterly treatment reveal a monumental anatomy, charged with sensuality and mystery, where the botanical turns into an intimate landscape and the flower becomes an expansive presence pulsating across the surface.
