Curatorial analysis

A tight close-up erases any notion of a horizon, turning the croton plant into a living architecture of imposing volume. Ana Broennimann dispenses with the entire plant, stem, and soil; what fills this four-foot-tall canvas is an exuberant layering of leaves arranged in a vegetal gear system that pushes outward, overflowing all four edges of the frame.

The hermetic black background plays a structural role. Rather than functioning as atmosphere or suggesting shadow, it operates as an absolute void that sharply silhouettes each leaf blade, amplifying its luminosity. Against this almost geological darkness, sulfur yellows, blazing oranges, and carmine reds vibrate like hot enamels, moderated only by green margins that recall the chlorophyll origin behind such chromatic mutation.

The mixed media introduces an essential tactile roughness. The paint surface is neither flat nor aimed at the delicate transparency of botanical watercolor: it holds a mineral grain, an earthy texture that catches the gallery's physical light and lends sculptural weight to the leaf's flesh. Across this modeled ground, the drawing of the veins and dark mottling is inscribed with a steady hand, articulating a rhythm of concentric curves that spiral the gaze straight toward the painting's core.

By pulling this ornamental species from the familiar setting of a tropical garden and scaling it to monumental proportions, the artist transforms the commonplace into a disquieting presence. The croton ceases to be a domestic accent and becomes an inquiry into nature's luminous intensity: a controlled detonation where vegetal vitality rivals an unyielding blaze.
