Curatorial analysis

A vermilion sea overflows the horizontal frame and dissolves any conventional horizon line. Álvaro Gómez constructs here a frontal and overpowering immersion where the panoramic scale, stretching over two meters wide, turns contemplation into a physical encounter: we do not gaze at the landscape from afar, we are submerged in its thickness.

The pictorial plane operates through a subtle gradation of densities. Along the lower edge, petals cluster into corporeal masses of pure red, resolute and juxtaposed with a palette knife or loaded brush, almost entirely concealing the ground. As the eye ascends, that compact mass atomizes; the red spots diminish in size and drift apart, revealing an undercurrent of vertical lines in earthy tones, grays, and charcoal that evoke tightly packed stems or trunks in shadow. This transition generates a vibrant rhythmic pulse, an illusion of atmospheric depth that relies not on geometric perspective, but on the saturation and frequency of the brushwork.

Across the surface, the acrylic medium retains its vibrant opacity, playing with the tension between graphic flatness and tactile relief. Minute touches of pale ochre, whitish glints, and deep dark centers within the flowers fracture the uniformity of the red, allowing an otherwise claustrophobic foliage to breathe. There is an almost volcanic intensity in the chromatic dominance, contrasted with the intrinsic fragility evoked by the floral motif.

Bosque en Rojo blurs the line between figurative landscape and painterly abstraction. The obsessive accumulation of red corollas can be read equally as the celebration of an uncontainable botanical burst or as a symbolic tide tethered to passion, blood, or the memory of the land. By depriving us of both sky and earth, the canvas traps us in an enduring present where nature is not a passive backdrop, but a living force claiming the entirety of visible space.
