Curatorial analysis

A visual field without a horizon greets the viewer, dispensing with sky and ground to transform the canvas into an immersive vertical cross-section of dense wild growth. The eye finds no resting vanishing point, remaining instead caught within a vibrant botanical mass that claims every inch of the surface.

At the painting's base, a vaporous atmosphere of slate-gray and violet tones supports a network of imprinted leaves and ferns, resembling fossilized silhouettes or the lingering shades of an underlying foliage. Across this shadowy ground, matter erupts in the foreground: thick, localized dabs of pure pigment yield fuchsia, orange, cadmium yellow, and luminous white corollas. This layering creates a sharp tactile friction between the delicate softness of the dim background and the physical, almost sculptural immediacy of petals pushing forward into the viewer's space.

The internal rhythm unfolds through a subtle gradation of light and visual weight. Along the lower register, warm pigments cluster with tight intensity, producing a restless cadence of tiny forms vying for dominance. As the eye travels toward the upper edge, these chromatic flecks diminish in scale and frequency, giving way to the purplish haze that seems to dissolve the vegetation into suspended air. There is no linear perspective; depth is achieved exclusively through glazing, color temperature, and the physical density of the gesture.

By turning away from rigid botanical documentation, Álvaro Gómez presents a tactile celebration of common wild growth. The generous scale monumentalizes the minute, turning the fragile presence of anonymous wildflowers into a self-sustaining ecosystem where nature is not observed from afar, but envelopes the viewer in its continuous, overflowing pulse.
