Curatorial analysis

A crimson eruption tenaciously occupies the lower half of the canvas, gathering hundreds of corollas that compete to saturate the plane. Álvaro Gómez conceives this large-scale format from two vertically colliding forces: a plant mass surging upward in search of air, and a viscous, mineral curtain cascading from the upper edge, washing the atmosphere in metallic and earthy tones.

The construction of the surface rests on a marked polarity of densities. At the base, the acrylic takes on a tactile, almost sculptural quality, where each floral bud claims its own volume through dense paste that catches the light along its rugged edges. As the eye moves toward the upper register, this compact mass thins out and the stems become more exposed, slender, and sinuous, allowing the background to seize prominence. There, the handling changes drastically: the paint flows thinly, dripping down in veins of ochre, gold, and dark umber that evoke a geological patina, a weathered wall, or a sky heavy with driving rain.

Chromatic contrast sustains the overall tension. Pure vermilion red, unmuted, stands out with aggressive vibration against the subdued tones of antique gold and dark seepages. Rather than acting as a merely passive backdrop, this golden veil seems to gradually dissolve the flowers attempting to colonize it, entrapping the highest blossoms within a dense, impenetrable atmosphere.

By deliberately dispensing with a horizon line and any hint of classical perspective, the scene departs from ordinary botanical scale to become an atmospheric event. Gómez transforms an elemental natural motif into a visual conflict between blossoming and storm, where the pictorial medium operates simultaneously as rising sap and burying rain.
