Curatorial analysis

An amber bath of light dominates the surface before the eye can settle on any botanical shape. In this large format, Guillermo Conte submerges the space in a gradation of toasted ochres, mustards, and earthy glazes reminiscent of the patina on a weathered wall or the density of fossilized resin. There is neither horizon nor recognizable sky; the ground operates instead as an autonomous atmosphere, laden with sedimentations, subtle drips, and scumbles where the paint seems to have matured over time rather than merely dried.

From the lower base, the almond tree rises with a contained, calligraphic stroke. Its branches fan out toward the margins, tracing a plant rhythm that balances fragility and firmness. A palpable tension exists between the liquid nature of the background (built from dispersed stains and watery transparencies) and the graphic precision defining the dark stems, whose slender scale contrasts with the monumental breadth of the canvas.

Across this linear armature, the blossoms burst forth. Applied with brief impastos of white and ivory, these floral buds concentrate the highest textural relief on the canvas. They function as luminous sparks detaching themselves from the yellow plane, interrupting the dominant warmth with a tactile, cool note. At a scale of a meter and a half in height, these small incisions of pure matter acquire an almost architectural presence, as though sustaining the respiration of the entire foliage.

The tree remains suspended in an ambiguous time, held between the arrival of the bud and the fixity of a golden fossil. The flowering does not describe a concrete botanical season here, but an act of visual resistance: plant life persisting, sharp and quiet, caught within the radiant memory of matter.
