Curatorial analysis

Water is not presented here as a motif to be contemplated from afar, but as a plane that absorbs the gaze into its own horizontality. By dispensing entirely with a horizon line, Guillermo Conte places the viewer in a zenithal or suspended vantage point, where the two-meter-wide canvas functions as the taut mirror of a current or a calm pond. The monumental scale does not overwhelm; on the contrary, it expands peripheral vision, inviting the viewer to traverse the surface much like someone seeking orientation in the fluctuation of an inner tide.

The entire structure rests on a rhythm of horizontal sweeps. Over a vaporous ground of grayish greens, celadons, and translucent washes that suggest fathomless depth, shorter, decisive, and nervous opaque strokes settle. These dense brushstrokes, veering toward an almost black pine green, float across the left and lower sections with a botanical cadence, evoking submerged shadows or foliage carried by the stream. Fleeting touches of pale yellow and lime green act as intermittent points of light, refracted glints that disrupt the aquatic atmosphere's homogeneity and generate an almost tactile vibration.

The pictorial matter works at two distinct speeds. On one side, the fluidity of diluted acrylic running down in vertical washes and atmospheric veils; on the other, the scraped or dragged impasto that affirms the physical paint on the canvas. Within this duality lies a reflection on what is visible and what is submerged; that which the eye recognizes as a reflection is simultaneously the direct mark of the brush traveling from side to side.

The surface thus becomes a space of suspended contemplation. Rather than describing the liquid element, the painting embodies its mutable logic: a substance capable of holding light, concealing the depths, and registering the passage of time in the subtle tremor of a ripple.
