Curatorial analysis

A proliferation of electric blue erupts from the base of the canvas, disputing territory with an earthy, mineral, and dense ground. Across just twenty-seven by twenty-two centimeters, Álvaro Gómez establishes an almost microscopic scale, forcing the gaze to linger on the friction between two distinct plastic realms: damp rock or bark across the upper half, and a botanical swarm advancing in relief from below.

The blue corollas, modeled with thick acrylic that retains the volume of the paste, appear to fold and open like tiny fungi or fleshy petals. Each blue cluster adds an unmistakable tactile tension; these are not flat strokes, but sculptural accretions that modulate ambient light through deep cobalt and indigo shadows, capped by cerulean and sky-blue ridges. This globular cadence contrasts with the vertical grain of the backdrop, where paint slides in controlled drips, ocher washes, rust, and ash grays that evoke the furrowed bark of an ancient trunk or a weathered geological strata.

The horizontal partition is far from rigid. Several solitary shoots climb along the grooves of the background, breaking the boundary between stillness and germination. An atmosphere of fertile twilight permeates this small field, reminiscent of a forest floor or undergrowth caught just before dawn. The luminescent charge radiated by the blues does not stem from an overt external light source, but from their stark contrast against the muted earth that anchors their ascent.

By confining physical dimensions to a chamber format, Gómez compresses an uncontainable vegetal vitality into a modest space. The surface acts as a magnifying lens upon a quiet event, where pictorial matter ceases merely to describe a landscape and becomes, in itself, humus, moisture, and blooming.
