Curatorial analysis

Red bursts forth with the force of a biological pulse that refuses to be contained. In an intimate square of thirty centimeters per side, Álvaro Gómez concentrates a vibrant mass of matter in vermilion, scarlet, and crimson tones across the lower half. These applications are not merely flat brushstrokes, but sculptural volumes of dense acrylic protruding from the canvas, modeled with small indentations and dark basal shadows that catch the ambient light. Each cluster behaves like a poppy petal, a spore, or a glowing seed, gathered in an organic rhythm that pulses with an almost cellular urgency.

Confronting this dense, expansive proliferation, the upper portion of the painting offers a rigorous, enigmatic counterpoint. There, the paint abandons tactile thickness to surrender to the fluidity of dripping and vertical settling. Marbled streaks of ash grey, graphite, bone-white glazes, and subtle violet nuances run downward like water on live rock or the striated bark of a monumental tree. The compositional contrast is relentless: the liquid, downward gravity of the background simultaneously supports and threatens the red heads, while they climb against the grain, sending isolated buds on thread-like stems seeking to gain ground in the mineral twilight.

This confrontation between what drips down and what sprouts up intentionally displaces the scale of the viewer's gaze. By renouncing the horizon line and any traditional architectural or botanical reference, the work can be read interchangeably as a macroscopic view of a rugged slope or an extreme close-up of crimson moss clinging to damp stone. Álvaro Gómez avoids the decorative complacency of the floral genre to propose a realm of visual resistance, where the raw impasto engages the coldness of the support and color asserts itself as an irrevocable act of vital survival.
