Curatorial analysis

The circular format dissolves any earthly anchor point and compels us to look directly downward, as if peering over the ledge of a well or onto the placid surface of a backwater where the horizon does not exist. Over a vaporous background of ashen tones and pale glazes, a tide of scarlet forms bursts forth. This is no passive botanical motif; the gaze encounters a vibrant eruption where each corolla appears arrested mid-transit, suspended above the liquid tension of a current that is only faintly discerned.

What at a distance registers as a flat pattern is contradicted upon closer examination of the material itself. The acrylic transcends the strict two-dimensionality of the canvas, folding into near-sculptural reliefs that bestow upon the petals a tactile, brittle fleshiness casting genuine shadows across the pictorial ground. These twisted volumes, with recesses sinking into carbon blacks and burnt wine nuances, stand in sharp contrast to the milky atmosphere of the lower layer. There, amid washes that evoke the density of water or steam, subtle dark filaments operate as submerged stems or invisible drifts that sustain the assembly.

The chromatic clash between the feverish intensity of the red and the grayish chill of the background orchestrates an immersive, decentered rhythm. There is no vanishing point or central focus to establish a hierarchy across the scene: the dispersion is all-over, pressing outward against the physical edges of the tondo and suggesting that this drifting carpet extends well beyond the canvas perimeter. The composition thus oscillates between the quietude of a ritual offering cast upon a river and the visceral force of an uncontrollable natural event. By eschewing any peripheral reference, the artist turns this circle into a gravity-defying aperture, leaving the viewer to confront the silent vertigo of that which drifts without ever making land.
