Curatorial analysis

A dense, chlorophyllous atmosphere dominates this panoramic format, where the pictorial matter appears to have settled like moss upon wet stone. Guillermo Conte constructs an unstable territory here, in which geological abstraction and graphic anecdote coexist in constant friction. Over a surface worked with drips, scuffs, and glazes of ocher and moss green, tiny children's silhouettes emerge, delineated with a rapid, almost calligraphic stroke that contrasts sharply with the organic thickness of the background.

The children wear archaic clothing, recognizable mainly by the white flash of starched collars that function as visual buoys within the sea of pigment. Some carry slender rods or explore the ground, scattered along a frieze that foregoes any clear horizon. This deliberately reduced scale against the vastness of the plane underscores a moving fragility: the bodies do not stand on firm soil, but rather float or remain suspended amid a chromatic haze that feels as much like foliage as stagnant water.

The horizontal rhythm disperses the gaze without granting a definitive anchor. There are areas where the paint thickens into deep, dark greens, particularly at the lateral edges, creating a compression that channels light toward the center of the canvas. There, sulfurous yellows and touches of pale salmon open an ambiguous clearing, a diffuse luminosity that bathes the figures without casting definite shadows.

This oscillation between the corporeal and the ghostly endows the scene with an unmistakable mnemonic resonance. The figures seem to fade away at the very moment one attempts to fix them, as though the pictorial vegetation were not an exterior landscape, but rather the living substance of a childhood memory dissolving and reinventing itself upon the canvas.
