Curatorial analysis

The gravitational center of the piece does not lie solely in its physical axle, but rather in the tension between utilitarian heritage and systematic calculation. A traditional wheel structure, with spokes of weathered wood bearing traces of friction and a deeply oxidized iron hub, supports an even ring of light-toned wood perforated in a concentric pattern. This perforated ring, reminiscent both of mechanical music-box cylinders and old agricultural sorting drums, introduces a rigorous grid over the rustic support.

Raking light reveals the actual depth of each orifice, casting tiny shadows that turn the frontal plane into a living lattice of voids and reliefs. In contrast to the roughness of the central metal and the faded, mossy tone of the spokes, the pale surface of the ring imposes an almost industrial geometric discipline. This material duality generates an oscillatory rhythm: the eye travels from the static heaviness of corroded iron toward the visual lightness of rhythmic perforations arranged across the circular sectors.

The title, paradoxically austere when confronted with a palette dominated by earth tones and patinas, suggests a re-reading of color through density and substance. Hues are not applied as painterly pigment, but rather emerge as temporal traces: the ochre of planed wood, the fading green of working wood on the spokes, and the mineral brown of the ironwork. It is a chromatic circle founded on the physical history of materials rather than the optical purity of the spectrum.

By suspending the wheel's original function and intervening in it with a binary pattern of voids and solids, the work strips the object of its rolling purpose to transform it into a spatial diagram that interrogates the passage of time, artisanal labor, and the persistence of primal shapes in contemporary visual culture.
