Curatorial analysis

The pencil, a primal tool of free mark-making and childhood learning, here relinquishes its graphic vocation to become a prison bar. In this vaulted volume that faithfully mirrors the morphology of a traditional birdcage or a rustic trap, dozens of red pencils form the bars of an airtight enclosure. Their bodies arranged in tight rows, alongside the metallic ferrules and erasers aligned at the base, establish an unforgiving rhythm of industrial order that turns the classroom into a cell.

The wooden framework sustains this confinement with methodical, artisanal sobriety. Every element is calibrated into strict modules, repeating the hexagonal profile and scarlet lacquer of the school utensil across verticals, diagonals, and a floor that preclude any escape route. The contrast between the vivid warmth of the red and the carceral rigidity of the contraption generates a disturbing tension: the tool destined to open thought onto blank paper operates instead as a physical and ideological limit. The golden factory stamps legible on each shaft accentuate the serialization of knowledge and the homogenization of the individual under the cogs of pedagogical discipline.

Hovering in empty space, the cage contains no visible captive, yet its very architecture seals off the air. The absence of a prisoner shifts the symbolic weight onto the viewer, who recognizes in this punitive geometry the echoes of a standardized civic education. The title confirms this sharp and ironic edge, presenting the school not as a fertile ground for invention, but as a mechanism of domestication and framing where every student, like every pencil in the frame, must fit without ever overflowing the prescribed boundary.
