Curatorial analysis

A strictly blackened apple, with a matte, opaque surface that absorbs light, lies pierced through by a standard yellow school pencil. In a sculptural volume of barely five cubic centimeters, Alexander Chaves condenses an implacable symbolic weight around the pedagogical figure and its everyday mythologies. The traditional offering presented by pupil to teacher (that smooth fruit associated with early affection or moral reward in the classroom) is transmuted here into a somber orb, resembling a combustible device or a fruit charred by the rigors of the educational system.

The dynamic axis of the piece is dictated by the trajectory of the pencil. Thrust through the upper right flank and emerging slightly from the opposite side, where the sharpened graphite tip barely protrudes, the tool acts simultaneously as an arrow and a suture. This diagonal establishes a fierce tension against the spherical stillness of the fruit. The chromatic contrast operates bluntly; the bright yellow, the metal ferrule, and the pink eraser (universal emblems of childhood learning and the correction of mistakes) invade and puncture an impenetrable core that rejects all organic vitality.

The object’s intimate scale heightens its unsettling nature. By forgoing monumentality, the piece demands a close, almost tactile proximity, wherein the irregularities of the altered skin and the stiffness of its curved stem become apparent. The concise, direct title directs interpretation toward the friction inherent in the teaching vocation: discipline understood not as a neutral process of assimilation, but as an incision that irreversibly transforms human matter. At this intersection between scholastic tribute and piercing wound, the work dispels any naive reading of the methods, costs, and invisible consequences of education.
