Curatorial analysis

Four compartments rigorously demarcated by a white grid organize this metaphysical cabinet, where each quadrant operates as an autonomous, hermetic stage set. The cross-shaped structure not only divides the physical space, but also constantly exerts tension among reason, the body, time, and transgression.

In the upper-left compartment resides absolute order: cone, sphere, and cube rest in pristine whiteness upon polished wood, invoking the purity of ideal solids against a dark backdrop. In symmetrical diagonal tension, the lower-right quadrant encapsulates the relentless passage of time: an analog clock with a black dial embedded within a stone-like cavity, surrounded by graphite-shaded fractures and a circular pit reminiscent of architectural ruins.

Organic, vulnerable gravity disrupts this schema in the other two niches. At top right, a bitten apple levitates or rests upon a checkered plane rendered in golden ochres and black, charging the atmosphere with resonances of original transgression, the fleeting nature of pleasure, and the inevitable decay of fruit. Below to the left, stripped of all idealism, an anatomical heart sculpted in plaster stands atop another checkered floor; its severed blood vessels branch downward like roots or inert legs, anchoring the somatic reality of the organism within a cold, impassive arena.

The chessboard that lends the work its title transcends mere play to become an allegory of destiny. Felipe Herrera juxtaposes the geometric precision of assemblage against the fragility of the living: the hushed blood of the cardiac muscle and the exposed flesh of the fruit remain ensnared under the cold gaze of the mechanical timepiece and the silent mathematics of form.
