Curatorial analysis

The absolute cerulean blue is not a passive background here, but a luminous abyss where the figures float and assert themselves without needing ground. Against this dense sea or sky-like atmosphere, Rafael Fernández builds an almost heraldic structure: two interlocking profile faces crowned with ceremonial headwear, and the commanding silhouette of a black horse emerging from the lower shadows.

The game announced by the title unfolds both on a mental board and across the painted surface itself. On one hand, a thin horizontal white line cleanly slices through the composition, a mathematical horizon imposing a cool, geometric stillness. On the other hand, the pictorial matter responds with rebellious voluptuousness. The upper headdress or plumage, defined with incisions and knife strokes laden with vermilion and yellow, dialogues with the golden armor or breastplate bursting across the central figure's torso. There, the paint is not smoothed down, but instead piles into tactile reliefs, buildups of oil where light physically fractures across ridges and furrows.

The facial features, however, preserve an icy serenity. The larger face, with its clean contour and prominent nose, gazes leftward with the steadfastness of a monarch or a strategist; the smaller one, nestled like a gem at the core of the structure, offers a counterpoint of pale delicacy. Below, the dark horse, with its watchful eye and compact poise, introduces a sculptural gravity anchoring the chromatic fantasy toward the base.

In this convergence of kings, queens, and steeds, the checkmate ceases to be the violent end of a match and becomes a frozen revelation. The characters appear neither victorious nor defeated, but rather as entities suspended at the precise moment where destiny, cloaked in gold and shadow, has been sealed forever against the immensity of color.
