Curatorial analysis

The pronounced horizontal format imposes a processional, almost theatrical reading, where republican allegory sheds the coldness of traditional civic monuments to inhabit an intimate, enigmatic female choir. Rafael Fernández constructs a personal mythology out of patriotic symbols, where deep blue, diaphanous white, and fiery red function not as simple heraldic emblems, but as expansive textile draperies that rhythmically envelop, articulate, and connect each figure across the entire surface.

Toward the center, a figure evoking liberty raises a burning torch with serene composure, standing as the primary vertical axis that dynamizes the composition. Around her gravitate archetypes in dialogue with collective identity and the memory of the land: music suggested by the string player on the far left beside the oxcart wheel, the botanical offering of coffee in the hands of the woman draped in a cobalt mantle, and the gesture of welcome holding a tender branch on the right. The scene deliberately avoids martial clamor; civic heroism translates instead into aesthetic contemplation, harvest, stillness, and peaceful vigilance.

Illumination does not stem from a distinct external source, but from the inner radiance of the drapery and the ivory modeling of the skin tones. The gazes, characterized by almond-shaped eyes and heavy lids typical of the artist, evade direct confrontation with the viewer, enveloping the action in a ceremonial silence. The juxtaposition of textures, evident in the delicate filigrees of the headdresses and the almost sculptural solidity of the undulating garments, creates a play of planes recalling both classical bas-relief and the timeless realm of dreams.

The founding myth is thus reformulated as a lyrical, deeply humanized frieze. The homeland is not proclaimed through the noise or martial rhetoric of official history, but remains sheltered in the subtlety of gesture, the cadence of color, and the introspective dignity of its guardians.
