Curatorial analysis

The instrument does not accompany the dance: it builds it. In this large horizontal canvas, Salvador Ávalos deconstructs the anatomy of the Spanish guitar, turning it into a monumental colonnade where bridges, soundboards, and necks serve as podiums, steps, and arcades. The space opens like a Renaissance portico bathed in a golden, solar light that drifts toward clear, Mediterranean blue backgrounds, creating an atmosphere of classical serenity touched by reverie.

Across this hybrid stage, four dancers articulate a choreography suspended in time. Each body responds to a distinct sonic register. On the left, a figure wrapped in a swirl of ochre fabric seems to condense the rhythmic strike of zapateado or the deep vibration of bass strings. In the center, the dancer on pointe expands into a paused leap, her yellow tunic billowing with a freedom that defies the gravity of the stone floor. Toward the right, the other two figures dialogue with the architecture and with luminous orbs crowning the archways, guiding the gaze along an ascending, fluid visual rhythm.

The acrylic execution reveals a deliberate contrast between surfaces. While the flesh tones and the flight of silks show smooth modeling and continuous transitions, the walls, arches, and sky planes exhibit a vibrant weave of short impastos, applied almost like luminous tesserae. This tactile texture catches ambient light reflections and accentuates the solidity of the fantastical stone against the ethereal lightness of the yellow and cerulean fabrics.

Ávalos transforms the musical act into a purely spatial, painterly experience. By fusing the curves of resonant wood with the elasticity of the female body, the scene proposes a synesthesia where the chord is not heard, but inhabited, danced, and contemplated beneath an enduring clarity.
