Curatorial analysis

An enveloping, nocturnal blue governs everything across this panoramic format, where the everyday notion of the market dissolves into a dreamlike staging. Salvador Ávalos populates the canvas with stylized female figures of slender lines and anonymous faces, arranged like notes upon an invisible staff. Instead of stalls or goods, the scene organizes around a metaphysical architecture of arches, columns, and translucent parasols floating overhead, transforming collective bustle into a static, silent ballet.

The spatial construction rests on an interplay of overlapping planes and circular platforms or interlocking shapes reminiscent of puzzle pieces. Atop these pedestals, each woman adopts a hieratic posture: they hold fans, carry suggested instruments, or display evening gowns transitioning from lemon yellow to fuchsia and turquoise. These warm, luminous accents disrupt the hegemony of the cerulean blue, establishing a visual tempo that guides the eye from one edge to the other across the two-meter-wide canvas. On the lower right, piano keys curve upward from the floor, reinforcing the melodic dimension that permeates the gathering.

At the base's center, a reclining female figure resting on cushions breaks the prevailing verticality, offering an earthly resting point against the ascent of the others. The pictorial matter reveals a subtle, textured surface, a discreet impasto across which the paint blends into soft gradients of light and shadow. Rather than recording a site of commercial exchange, Mercado II proposes a territory of symbolic encounter, where the transaction takes place between suggested music, the elegance of bodies, and shared intimacy suspended in perpetual bluish twilight.
