Curatorial analysis

A suspended, milky luminosity governs the painting, emanating from three female presences that appear to hover between wakefulness and mist. Rafael Fernández concieves these bodies not as dense volumes, but as vaporous apparitions whose heads are enveloped by immense halos or spherical coiffures resembling cottony clouds. At the center, the main figure draws the gaze through an ochre brimmed hat that bursts forth like a contained sun, anchored below by a resolute carmine-red skirt, the sole point of earthly weight in an entirely weightless atmosphere.

Toward the flanks, the other two women modulate the intensity of this apparition. The figure on the left, displaying a faint, frontal gaze, bears a crown of linear hair delineated with the delicacy of filigree against a grayish cloud, while her pinkish chest dissolves into an almost abstract geometric plane. To the right, the third woman withdraws into shadow, reduced to a dark, spectral silhouette holding a circular object, nearly merging into the nocturnal ground. This stepped graduation of light establishes a theatrical rhythm in which individual identity gradually dissolves into pure chromatic resonance.

The wooden support engages in an intimate dialogue with the mixed media of oil and enamel. The surface juxtaposes translucent glazes with dry scumbling and scrapes, allowing the cerulean blue of the background and the surrounding blacks to vibrate with a cavernous texture. Light does not strike from an external source: it springs from the pictorial matter itself, from that milky warmth that defines the barely sketched faces. Fernández transforms the enigma of the feminine realm into a silent ritual, where the visible coexists with memory and reverie.
