Curatorial analysis

An almost cloistral gloom shelters an unusual conclave. The light does not descend from the dark ceiling, but rather emanates from a hidden lower core, backlighting a succession of introspective faces and hands that seem to manipulate an invisible substance. Crowned by tall conical mitres, halfway between pontifical insignia and attributes of a hermetic order, these female figures gather in a complicity that suspends any notion of profane time.

The space is articulated through a constant tension between rigid geometries and almost ethereal bodies. In the upper band, a frieze with weathered monumental lettering hints at an ancient precinct or an institutional architecture overtaken by mystery. Two seated figures in the foreground anchor the base of the painting, while behind them stand three presences whose triangular headpieces guide the gaze vertically into the shadows. Toward the right edge, additional cones sink into the darkness like a row of silent sentinels. The chromatic scheme contrasts the spectral coolness of cerulean blues and teals against the dense warmth of muted vermilions, ochre earths, and a straw yellow that ignites the chest of the central figure.

The treatment of the surface operates through subtle glazes and transparencies that strip the bodies of earthly weight. Facial features, outlined with neat precision over hazy washes, retain a melancholic languor devoid of theatrical drama. At the center, the silent dialogue of the fingers (some holding a faint luminous shape, others gauging an imaginary thread) concentrates the entire dramatic charge. By multiplying the legendary figure of the popess into a secret collective, the image proposes a clandestine liturgy where dogma gives way to enigma and the sacred takes refuge in shadow.
