Curatorial analysis
Curatorial analysis
A massive balloon in amber and terracotta tones commands the scene from above, suspended within a theatrical box that defies the boundary between domestic interior and celestial firmament. Its spherical, substantial, festooned volume hovers over a fragile paper boat equipped with a smokestack, resting atop an arcaded platform. Below, a checkered floor organizes the linear perspective, defining a cubic room whose walls seem to hold a secret on the verge of departure.
The composition's architecture operates through a deliberate confrontation of scale. The vessel occupies the exact center of the middle ground, transformed into a hybrid craft designed for both aerial and marine navigation. Toward it ascends a diminutive figure in circus attire, carrying an oversized pear on their back and cradling a small sphere in their hands that echoes the title of the piece. The figure casts a crisp, elongated shadow across the left wall, a device that heightens the theatrical lighting and underscores the solitude of departure.
The surface treatment relies on glazes and dappled textures that softly age the walls in dusty pink and ochre hues. This warm, almost breathable atmosphere breaks abruptly at the top edge, where the ceiling gives way to a strip of nocturnal blue dotted with minute stars. That stark contrast between room enclosure and cosmic expanse transforms the chamber into a portal.
Scattered across the floor, a key, a timepiece, and a folded letter remain as relics of a farewell or of chronological time rendered obsolete. The boat awaits not water, but the thermal lift of the sphere crowning it for the journey. Everything in this suspended realm evokes an intimate passage, in which physical travel merges with the solemn safeguarding of the fragile against the immense.
