Curatorial analysis

A crimson and brownish abyss dominates the scene, severed by a curved row of slabs that evokes a monumental keyboard. Upon each of these plinths lies a human figure rendered in ash tones, static and blindfolded, plunged in mineral lethargy. Two colossal hands, articulated with concentric grooves reminiscent of wood grain or fingerprint ridges, burst into this void. They are not conventional human limbs: their topographical texture and ochre hue turn them into tectonic forces disrupting the geometric order of death or slumber.

Physical contact triggers the transformation. In the lower section, the index finger of one of these gigantic hands brushes against a miniature figure that begins to free itself from stone; the body sheds its marble rigidity and adopts a golden glow, rising toward an external call. At the opposite end, the second hand presses down and dismantles the path, dislodging pieces that plummet into the void. Across the crimson plain below, two detached silhouettes take on the visceral red pigment of the background, floating or sinking in suspended gravity.

Ruth Angulo articulates a rigorous tension between architectural seriality and organic gesture. The band of niches, spiraling away into the upper right, establishes a visual recession that contrasts with the sculptural weight of the hands. The pictorial surface opposes the soft, diffused matte atmosphere of the red ground, achieved through subtle glazes, against the almost cartographic graphic precision of the fingers and anatomical reliefs.

Despertar proposes an allegory of ontological transition. The collective passivity of the aligned figures, uniform in their grey shroud, is shattered by an intervention that is simultaneously rescue and vertigo. Waking here is neither a painless nor a predictable act, but rather a violent detachment from the substrate that forces the individual to plunge into the unknown.
