Curatorial analysis

A diagonal slash divides the paper with the force of a collapse: to the right, a dark mass of graphite and ink absorbs the space; to the left, the deserted whiteness of the ground acts as absolute exposure. The tension lies not only in this geometric antagonism, but in the border zone where that monumental shadow fractures to reveal bodily vestiges.

Along that jagged edge, the drawing explores a broken anatomy. Toward the white void extends a spiky silhouette, articulated like a shattered limb or a tentative claw; within the gloom, meanwhile, rests a negative space with rectilinear contours and white segmentations that suggest vertebrae, ribs, or a stylized wing. A thin vertical incision descends from this cavity, like a thread or plumb line measuring the weight of the fall. The matter is not entirely opaque: the successive strokes of ink and pencil reveal a striated, almost mineral texture that imbues the black block with an atmospheric vibration.

The title guides the eye toward the paradox of non-presence. The angel appears not as a glorious creature, but as a subtraction, a fissure in the order of the visible. We witness a play of appearances and disappearances in which form gains existence only through contrast and rupture. The intimate scale of the paper heightens this sense of fragility, turning what could be a monumental scene into a secret note on detachment.

Ruth Angulo condenses here the power of the sketch as a realm of pure inquiry. Rather than functioning as a mere preparatory trial subordinate to a subsequent development, this work preserves the precise moment in which the figure resists dissolving into darkness, suspended forever in the vertigo of the blank page.
