Curatorial analysis

A bristling crown of graphite and wood commands the eye at once, concentrated within a scale so diminutive that it fits in the palm of a hand. In barely five centimeters of total volume, Alexander Chaves articulates an immediate tension by transforming fragments of sharpened pencils into a threatening inflorescence. Dozens of conical wooden points in reddish hues, tipped with the sharp darkness of carbon, converge and radiate outward like the spines of an urchin or the hostile bloom of a thistle that has taken root in the mouth of a glass flask.

The structure relies on a rigorous interplay of material oppositions. In the lower half, the bulbous glass vessel, with its slight greenish veil, opens to the light with an almost liquid clarity, exposing an uninhabited interior. Exactly where the flask's neck should receive or pour, the radial cluster of cones blocks passage. The dense wood, whittled and shaped with geometric precision, asserts a dry, opaque, and defensive texture that contrasts sharply with the vulnerable purity and crystalline roundness serving as its pedestal.

This contradictory anatomy dialogues directly with the artwork's title. The flask stores nothing but air, yet access to it remains strictly armored: the tool of drawing and intimate inscription ceases to trace ideas on paper, turning instead into an enclosure that pricks and repels the touch. The tiny scale compels the viewer into a conspiratorial, almost tactile proximity, only to confront them with the warning of its blades. Chaves builds an object that encapsulates the paradox of emotional protection, where that which is most fragile can only survive by rendering itself untouchable.
