Curatorial analysis
Curatorial analysis
The markedly panoramic format immediately imposes the logic of a frieze or a theatrical stage. Across a clear, pale horizontal band running the full width of the canvas, Roberto Puente arranges two disconcerting presences: a tiny tin train chugging forward as it puffs a dense column of smoke and, awaiting its approach, a hollowed pumpkin whose vertical cut carves out the opening of a vegetal tunnel. This disparity in scale subverts any domestic certainty; the playful object, rendered with the graphic candor of a children's book illustration, and the textured fruit of the earth share the same physical gravity upon a suspended ledge.
Behind them, the background dismantles traditional perspective, operating instead as a stratified wall laden with memory and graphic remnants. To the left, an ochre block with architectural edges shelters handwritten script in dark ink, reminiscent of an archival document or a testimonial fragment rescued from oblivion. As the eye moves toward the center, the acrylic accumulates density through pink washes, scrapings, and impasto that receive the chimney's whitish steam. There, silhouetted against the atmosphere, the geometric lattice of an electric-blue truss bridge emerges, an industrial framework floating without visible anchors.
Toward the far right, the surface ignites into a resonant cadmium-red field, stamped with circular imprints resembling spectral wheels or gears, before plunging into a near-black shadow where a second inscription appears to dissolve. The visual friction between the toy's lightness and the surrounding material weight sustains the enigma of the scene. The pumpkin casts a dense, phantom-like double shadow, transforming its hollowed opening into an unsettling threshold. The convoy's journey leads toward no identifiable terminal, but rather into the belly of an organic architecture, suspending memory, travel, and play within an enigmatic poetics of space.
