Curatorial analysis

A dense tide of cobalt blue commands the lower two-thirds of the canvas, enforcing a chromatic saturation that eschews all hesitation. Álvaro Gómez constructs a landscape where botanical forms do not serve botanical classification, but rather a rhythmic, tactile accumulation of rounded corpuscles, given body through subtle gradations of light and shadow. This compact cluster of blossoms climbs hungrily from the lower edge, progressively dispersing as it ascends the pictorial plane.

Behind this blue proliferation emerges a vertical veil dominated by scorched earths, ochres, amber streaks, and subdued incandescent glows. The thermal contrast is absolute: the electric chill of the blue clashes directly with the geological warmth of the background. The dripping pigments and streaming marks suggest a damp rock face or foliage bathed in the day's final light, grounding the concept of sunset not in a literal depiction of the sun, but in the lingering memory of its temperature.

At a scale spanning nearly two meters wide, the painting engulfs the viewer's field of vision and dismantles the traditional notion of a horizon. There is no open sky or conventional vanishing point; the gaze remains suspended between the dense foreground of petals and the dripped texture of the upper register. Slender stems, rendered as tremulous filaments bearing the highest blossoms, act as visual hinges between two distinct plastic languages: the sculpted solidity of the corollas and the fluid dissolution of mineral matter.

The threshold referenced in the title thus reveals itself as a perceptual boundary. It marks the unseen divide where the vitality of the organic confronts the mineral silence of approaching night, sustaining a tension that settles not into calm, but into an enduring optical vibration.
