Curatorial analysis

The gesture of the raised chin and the marked tension in the neck govern the entire structure. In Pues Dímelo, the female figure neither retreats nor yields ground; on the contrary, she stands in resolute frontality, her arms drawn behind her back to thrust her torso firmly forward. The haughtiness of her head, tilted upward at an almost defiant angle, engages directly with the title, turning her corpulence into an eloquent assertion of dignity and sovereignty.

Carved from wood with a meticulous satin polish, the sculpture modulates ambient light across smooth transitions that eliminate any sharp edges. Manuel Vargas synthesizes clothing and anatomy into a single enveloping volume: the dress falls like a solid bell holding the hips to concentrate visual weight in the lower half, resolving into two thick legs anchored firmly to the base. The reddish grain of the material is far from an accidental ornament, following the shifts in the sculpted mass as it traces the curvature of the belly and the fullness of the torso like a living current that endows the density of the timber with an organic pulse.

A sharp counterpoint exists between the intrinsic gravity of the block and the wry lightness of the bodily challenge. By concealing the hands and synthesizing facial features into compact planes, the sculpture moves beyond individualized portraiture to embody a universal physical posture. It captures the unflinching stance of someone awaiting an answer while fully aware of her own solidity, offering a presence where a scale of seventy-four centimeters commands the physical authority of an intimate monument.
