Curatorial analysis

Weight and gravity command the first encounter with this piece, where the human body expands until it becomes almost an egg or a river boulder. Alexy Palenzuela constructs a corporeal mass resting on its own density, condensing in its silhouette a centripetal force that gathers limbs, torso, and gesture into a single protective core.

Contrasting with the curvaceous roundness of the thighs and torso, a rigorous stepped structure of geometric lines emerges from the back. This tectonic contrast introduces a quiet tension: the organic, tender, and soft nature of the flesh dialogues with an orthogonal block that seems to anchor the figure to the ground or evoke an intimate architecture, almost like an urban backrest against which to take shelter.

The head, raised with closed eyes in a gentle ecstasy of slumber, directs the ascending rhythm toward a headpiece or stylized coiffure that delicately crowns the silhouette. The arms cross tightly over the tucked leg, generating a continuous embrace that seals the emotional circuit of the pose. Nothing escapes that absorbed withdrawal invoked by the title.

Across the surface of the bronze, the warm, iridescent patina multiplies the nuances of light. At the crests of the curves, the metal takes on golden and honeyed highlights, while dense shadows gather within anatomical folds and junctures to emphasize the depth of the modeling. The dark, polished stone base functions as a sober mirror that discreetly doubles the resting mass, underscoring the monumental presence of an intimately scaled sculpture.
