Curatorial analysis

The emphatic weight of bronze transforms here into sonic cadence. Three figures, synthetically stripped of ornament, share a common ground, enclosing an invisible circular space where music acquires a tangible body. On the left, a player strikes the maracas with bent arms and an upturned profile in pure rhythmic concentration. On the right, a musician plucks the strings of an instrument whose neck rises boldly along a sharp diagonal. At the crest of this triangular dialogue, the central figure tilts her head back with open mouth in full song, resting her chin on her hand in a gesture that unites vocal effort and introspection.

Villegas shapes anatomical mass through generous, continuous volumes, distilling musculature and bone structure into dense, resting curves. The dark, satiny patina of the metal catches light across broad ridges, gliding over massive shoulders, powerful thighs, the curve of backs, and the roundness of the instruments. These highlights do not fragment the figures; instead, they trace continuous surfaces to emphasize a heavy, almost telluric sensuality. The void separating the three characters is not an absence, but an active resonance chamber where gazes and gestures converge without ever touching.

There is in this ensemble a communal celebration of music as a simultaneously physical and spiritual act. The stoutness of the bodies anchors the scene to the earth, while upright heads and poised hands evoke lyrical elevation. By dispensing with anecdotal details such as clothing or ornamental setting, the sculptural group achieves a timeless character. The three musicians do not pose for the viewer: they inhabit a shared trance, an intimate moment where sound seems to emanate from the very density of the bronze.
