Curatorial analysis

The descending arc of the neck dictates the energy of the entire sculpture. This is not the docile gesture of an animal yielding to the rein, but a calculated containment, an anatomical spring compressed to its limit just before surging forward. Titled in reference to Caligula's famed steed, the figure embodies the intersection between physical power and mythological excess, dispensing with harness or tackle to focus its entire narrative on the sheer robustness of its muscular mass.

Palenzuela synthesizes equine proportions through taut, bulging planes reminiscent of the massiveness of archaic statuary. The head, turned downward with ears alert, sheds minor physiognomic details to become a continuous block where jaw and muzzle flow into an almost herculean chest. The mane, resolved as a laminar crest with crisp edges, introduces a clean geometric line that cuts through the dominant roundness of the neck, giving the profile a distinctly martial edge.

The handling of the bronze plays a decisive role in how the material breathes. A deep, dark patina, at times mirror-like, coats the hollows and concavities, absorbing and reflecting light with waxy highlights. In contrast, the anatomical crests, the ridge of the mane, and the bony prominences are exposed through selective rubbing, revealing the rough, golden tones of the underlying metal. This tactile alternation ensures that light does not glance off uniformly, but instead underscores the internal tension of the bronze flesh.

Departing from conventional equestrian imagery, the sculpture foregoes the triumphant trot to explore a stillness pregnant with force. The horse folds in on itself, transformed into a monument to gravity and latency, where imperial myth translates into pure, contained vigor.
