Curatorial analysis

The gesture governs everything: the arms raised to the sides of the head and the face tilted toward the sky condense a moment of sheer overwhelm, or perhaps surrender. In this corpulent female figure, the posture does not seek to disguise the weight of the body, but rather to charge it with deeply earthly drama. The title, Ahora Qué Hago (What Do I Do Now), immediately anchors the scene within the territory of everyday existential struggle, where uncertainty paralyzes yet simultaneously demands a response from the whole body.

The carving masterfully harnesses the living grain of the wood, turning the organic material into an active participant in the anatomy. The concentric growth rings expand directly across the swelling belly and exposed torso, accentuating the fleshiness of the volumes and lending an almost tactile warmth to the polished surface. Further down, the grain descends in vertical rhythms to shape the fluted folds of the skirt, which falls like a solid block to reveal two broad, steadfast feet planted without hesitation upon the dark plinth.

A rigorous tension exists between the heavy lower half and the opening of the upper limbs. While the mass of the hips and skirt anchors the woman to the earth with the fortitude of a rooted trunk, the outward-flaring elbows and exposed throat direct an exhalation upward. Light, sliding over the warm varnished sheen, carves areas of soft shadow that define the crease of the groin, the navel, and the collarbone, instilling movement into what would otherwise remain an immovable block.

Stripped of stylized canons, the figure proclaims its monumentality through the sheer honesty of its volume. Vulnerability and endurance coexist within the same grain, transforming a passing moment of perplexity into a steadfast presence endowed with dignity and telluric vigor.
