Curatorial analysis

The optical density of blue commands the gaze before the eye can even begin to assemble the anatomy. In this female torso, shorn of limbs and head in the tradition of classical Greco-Roman statuary, the material does not merely imitate water: it seems to have captured an entire block of ocean in suspension. Angel Lara replaces traditional marmoreal heaviness with a solid mass of translucent resin standing ninety centimeters tall, allowing sculptural weight and an apparent luminous weightlessness to coexist within a single monumental presence.

The body's axis responds to a subtle contrapposto in which the thrust of the right hip initiates an ascending torsion that sweeps through the abdomen and bust. This organic sinuosity directs reflections across an impeccably polished, mirror-like surface that refracts and distorts the viewer's immediate environment. Inwardly, light penetrates the volume, revealing fluctuating densities, sky-blue glazes, and internal tensions evocative of underwater currents or fossilized ice. There is no rigid boundary here between container and contained; the torso acts as a three-dimensional lens where anatomical shadows are not dark voids, but concentrated accumulations of cobalt and cerulean blue.

The rectangular stand, rough and bearing an iron-like patina, accentuates the figure's weightlessness through sharp contrast, serving as an indispensable physical anchor for a form that visually threatens to dissolve. By deliberately dispensing with the head and limbs, the sculpture sheds any biographical anecdote to emerge as a timeless archetype, linking the notion of the female body with the abyssal expanse invoked by its title. It is this ambivalence, between the tactile solidity of resin and the elusive fluidity of its marine palette, that sustains the poetic force of a piece caught in the moment just before turning into tide.
