Curatorial analysis

A tunnel of living branches directs the gaze toward a radiant vanishing point, yet the initial impact is delivered by the foreground trunks, rendered in fields of pure color that shatter any naturalistic expectation. Carlos Tapia places two vertical boles on the left, one scarlet and the other a striking yellow, confronted by the solid orange mass anchoring the right margin. It is a direct sensory assault where the trees function as load-bearing columns of a forested architecture, outlined by black contours that heighten their chromatic autonomy against the greenery.

As the pathway of violet and grayish tones advances into the canvas, the structure mutates. Straight trunks give way to twisted boughs in deep blues and earth tones that weave above the road, shaping an organic, almost Gothic vault. This vegetal arch creates a progressive spatial compression: the open, luminous air of the edges folds into thick shadow, only to reopen in a smaller, glowing yellow arch framing the exit. The tension between this dark hollow and the white brilliance in the distance articulates the rhythm of the visual journey, guiding the viewer from fauve exuberance into solemn retreat.

Across the support, the acrylic alternates between flat, opaque patches on the trunks and small, stippled dabs throughout the canopies, where emerald greens, yellows, and blues coexist without fully blending. This vibration within the foliage introduces a constant murmur of filtered light, while the road displays a smoother, calmer application, almost spectral in its pale violet hue.

The painting suggests a rite of passage or a journey toward revelation. The tunnel operates both as a sanctuary and an ordeal of transit, where nature is not merely contemplated but experienced as a living threshold. The final clarity is not just an optical effect of daybreak, but the inevitable destination of a passage through saturated color and the density of matter.
