Curatorial analysis

A rigorously vertical column standing over a meter and a half high articulates a dialogue between painting and sculpture. Gladys Heudelfeld dispenses with the traditional frame, turning the wall into an active ground for a suspended architecture where quadrangular wooden bodies are stratified in successive planes. Rhythm is organized along a central axis that seeks not strict symmetry, but a millimeter-precise balance of visual tensions and chromatic densities.

Each block functions as a module projecting actual shadows onto the next. The ensemble proposes an almost musical sequence of pauses and accents: broad squares acting as spatial anchors (the deep magenta at the top, the olive-green square in the center, the red at the bottom) interspersed with elongated segments in orange, warm yellows, and a petroleum-blue base. Small insertions of thin slats and silver metallic fillets cut into the wood, acting as optical incisions that disrupt the horizontality of certain sections while reinforcing the verticality of the whole.

The material is treated with precise polishing, devoid of visible brushstrokes, allowing the purity of flat color to gain its own volumetric weight. Rising across different relief levels, the surfaces interact with ambient light to produce subtle modulations at the edges, transforming a severe geometry into a vibrant organism.

This play of heights and contrasts evokes the constructive order of a contemporary totem or a visual code registered in superimposed layers. The piece achieves its ultimate power through the restraint of its boundaries: within a width of barely thirty centimeters, it condenses a monumental scale, compelling the gaze to traverse it from top to bottom like a three-dimensional score in which every tone and every angle holds an irreplaceable weight.
