Curatorial analysis

An explosion of blues saturates the base of the canvas with the force of a botanical tide advancing toward the viewer. Hundreds of small corollas, shaped through a firm and sculptural impasto that catches the light on every ridge of acrylic, crowd together in a foreground so dense that it seems to spill over the edges of the frame. Amid this vibrant throng of cobalt, ultramarine, and sky blue flicker, hidden yet persistent, tiny sparks of pure vermilion: subterranean fires that introduce an electrifying chromatic tension, shattering any purely decorative calm.

As the eye travels up the vertical format of the canvas, this compact mass begins to break apart at an unhurried rhythm. The petals lose their density, growing progressively more scattered and rising like a retreating flock or a flowering that dissolves into the air. It is precisely in this rhythmic opening where the painting reveals its veiled background, an earthy, striated, and mineral surface dominated by washes of ochre, brown, and muted green that evoke the rough texture of a damp cliff or the weathered bark of a tree. The contrast between the tactile sharpness of the raised blue and the vaporous quality of this bedrock produces an almost tactile depth.

The scale of ninety by one hundred and thirty-five centimeters amplifies this immersive quality. The surface functions as a botanical screen oscillating between overflow and concealment; the foliage does not simply rest before us, but rather seems to lift like a living curtain to reveal glimpses of what remains guarded on the other side. Álvaro Gómez transforms this floral motif into a meditation on weight, gravity, and the fleeting nature of matter, where the initial exuberance of blue ultimately yields to an ashen light that suggests both bare rock and the mist of the underbrush.
