Curatorial analysis

A blazing, caustic red dominates the surface in an almost organic proliferation. It is neither a uniform stain nor a static backdrop, but rather a tissue that seems to reproduce and devour the entirety of the plane. In this canvas by Álvaro Gómez, the acrylic material manifests with a singular chemical ferocity, where electric vermilions, dense carmines, and flashes of crimson gather into crusts, filaments, and porous buildups that evoke both cooling magma crust and an overflowing cell culture beneath a microscope.

Beneath this scarlet mantle breathes a dense, cold stratigraphy. Surfaces of lead grey, ash, mineral blacks, and subtle seepages of greyish green act as an indispensable thermal counterpoint. The tension within the piece does not arise from vanishing lines or calculated compositions, but from the frontal collision between this stony base and the liquid fire striving to occlude it. The acrylic dispenses with traditional brushwork; instead, one senses free flow, the settling of variable densities, and the chemical reactions between layers that leave scalloped contours alongside translucent glazes. It is a technique where the unpredictability of fluids and gravity negotiates with precise containment.

By relinquishing any central or hierarchical axis, the viewer's gaze is compelled to traverse the space in an unceasing sweep, perpetually oscillating between the macroscopic and the infinitesimally minute. It could well be a satellite capture of a scorched geography or the optical enlargement of violent coagulation. This impossibility of anchoring a single scale endows the surface with a vibrant autonomy: the painting neither mimics a landscape nor documents an external event, standing instead as a living, self-sufficient body captured at the exact moment the pigments' boiling churn was arrested upon the canvas.
