Curatorial analysis

A centrifugal whirlwind engulfs the canvas from a dizzying bird's-eye view. On this fairground track, the fiery carmine floor curves and fractures beneath the onslaught of oval cabins, transformed into capsules of perpetual collision. The overhead perspective, warped by yellow and silver arches that evoke metal bumpers and trails of inertia, dissolves any horizon line: the painting offers neither top nor bottom, but rather a rotational plunge in which the viewer's eye revolves without rest.

The bumper car, the quintessential symbol of urban mechanical amusement, has been commandeered by an insolent fauna. Wide-eyed jaguars with meticulously painted spots grip steering wheels or leap mid-impact, while ochre felines and mutant reptiles cling to the edges with claws and teeth. Carlos Tapia resolves this invasion through a rigorous, sharp black contour, closely indebted to comic art and pop sensibilities, which encloses flat, intensely saturated fields of acrylic: purples, strident oranges, electric blues, and acid greens collide with the very same violence as the vehicles.

Beneath the festive, chromatic surface of the amusement park lies an unsettling friction between control and instinct. The animals do not seem domesticated by the industrial contraption; instead, they appear trapped in its circular cynicism, compelled to reenact the ritual of collision with no chance of escape. The rigorously square format of 130 by 130 centimeters accentuates this expansive containment; nothing leaks past the margins, yet everything strains to burst through them. The painting thus operates as a sharp, playful allegory on the acceleration of the contemporary world, where ferocity hides beneath the glossy chassis of a children's ride.
