The wet asphalt functions as a broken mirror that duplicates the twilight sky and absorbs the dense pulse of San José. In this large-format canvas, Avenida Segunda sheds its topographical rigidity to become an atmospheric mass where golden light and water suspend everyday haste. The sky, laden with toasted ochres, sepias, and off-whites, cascades toward the road through washes and thin vertical drips, dissolving the silhouettes of buildings into a haze of steam and exhaust.
A central vanishing point organizes traffic with a tight yet dynamic cadence. In the foreground, the body of a vehicle and the elongated reflection of its red lights anchor the gaze on the left, while deep shadows and the dense urban foliage on the right balance the scene with grayish blues and dark greens. Suspended in the upper-left corner, the traffic light, rendered with dense, vibrant dabs of emerald green, interrupts the warm palette to dictate the rhythm of an impending stop or a delayed crawl.
Sequeira works the painterly surface by alternating broad, fluid washes with thick impastos that articulate brake lights, traffic cones, and the silhouettes of motorcyclists. A constant tension unfolds between the heavy mass of vehicles and the sheer fluidity of water on pavement, resolved through horizontal brushwork that pulls architectural reflections toward the viewer. The city is not recorded through documentary precision, but through the sensory memory of a downpour: that synthesis of warm asphalt, metallic glare, and luminous condensation that transforms urban congestion into an almost hypnotic space for contemplation.
