Arbol de la Vida

A bold cobalt blue anchors the architecture of this tree, whose trunk rises not as raw timber, but as a mosaic of ochre and earthy linear incisions. Gustavo Gómez reimagines the universal archetype of the tree of life through a festive, meticulous accumulation where botanical order surrenders to a playful mythology. The canopy is not populated by conventional foliage, but by a constellation of ethereal spirals, grape clusters, and small starlike blossoms that appear to drift in weightlessness.

This crown shelters a bestiary and a catalog of symbols where time coexists with myth. Multicolored scaled fish swim amidst the branches alongside a toucan, a ghostly owl, and a perched cat, while a sharp-rayed sun and a crescent moon share the same sky without temporal conflict. To the right, a pocket watch hangs suspended from a metal chain, counterbalancing burning tapers and dangling apples that invoke notions of duration, vigil, and temptation.

At the base, the root system grips a mound of graphic patterns in direct dialogue with an allegorical still life. The serpent coiled around the stem watches over a jeweled crown, a clay jug, two vividly patterned fans, and an open volume. Across its pages, a handwritten inscription presents a vitalist maxim that softens the solemnity of the traditional memento mori. Everyday objects and spiritual emblems are granted equal pictorial dignity.

The deliberate flatness of the spatial plane and the crisp, near-graphic precision of the drawing discard cast shadows, directing all visual tension toward contour lines and chromatic resonance. Gómez crafts a visual celebration in which human existence is framed as an inventory of possible wonders, sheltered by roots that honor the soil while reaching toward the firmament.
