Curatorial analysis

Three figures stripped of any temporal or geographical anchoring concentrate the tension of this sheet. José Manuel Gómez arranges them in an intimate semicircle, seated close to the ground, barefoot and wrapped in loose cloaks that fall with the sobriety of monastic habits or biblical garments. Each body assumes a distinct emotional posture: the figure on the left tilts their head with sorrow and rests a hand on the knee in a gesture of brooding; the central one, with an elongated face and taut neck, looks upward with an open mouth in an attitude of bewilderment or mystical listening; the one on the right, with a shadowed profile, remains upright like a silent, watchful witness.

The visual weight of the scene rests on a radical contrast between linear synthesis and material vibration. Gómez leaves the interior of the drapery almost untouched, reserving the white of the paper to act as an expansive, luminous mass, while defining the folds with a sharp, discontinuous black line that contours the anatomy with absolute precision. This clean drawing collides directly with the treatment of the surroundings: a murky, granular atmosphere where graphite or charcoal dust has been rubbed, scattered, and flecked until the background turns into a wall weathered by time.

Within this intimate format of twenty-two by twenty-nine centimeters lies a contained monumental scale. The space offers neither furniture nor a defined horizon, save for a faint horizontal line that barely hints at a bench or a ledge. By depriving the figures of an explicit narrative context, the gathering transforms into an enigma of unspoken words, shared secrets, or collective waiting. The bony hands and bare feet anchor the scene to a vulnerable human condition, where the line does not seek embellishment, but rather records the psychological density of an encounter halted forever.
